Doomsday: A Horrid Mix of Everything

Photobucket

I was thrilled to watch Doomsday as I had high expectations based from their trailer. But as they say, looks can be deceiving.

To be fair, the opening was impressive with the crowd panicking and one can really feel the end of the world scenario. But the good part ended there. After the opening credits rolled, one was transported into a world of sci-fi world of violence. Once the heroine went back to the quarantined Glasgow to get a cure for the Reaper virus, things got worse. Instead of zombies, the people there became punk tattooed rebels who are cannibals. I thought I was watching Mad Max for a second because of the motorcycle racing scenes.

When the remaining team finally escaped from the city into a rural area, I thought I was watching the Lord of the Rings as the people changed from punk rebels to medieval knights and maidens. There was even a castle and a coliseum scene that can be straight out from Gladiator. But the puzzling thing is that when they were trying to escape, there were boxes of cellphones and a fully working Bently in a cave complete with gas!

All in all, I suggest not to waste money on this crappy film. You will just be left with dollars short and a confused mind.

Photobucket

Unlike its predecessor, girl power takes center stage as the upcoming street fighter movie, Street Fighter: the Legend of Chun-Li, focuses on the adventures of Chun-Li and her quest for justice. Assigned to play the beautiful heroine is the half-Dutch, half Chinese actress Kristin Kreuk of Smallville fame. Also in the cast is Taboo of the popular singing group, the Black Eyed Peas.

As of the moment, the cast and crew just began filming in Thailand. This Capcom game turned live action movie is set to premiere around February 2009.

A Peek at Nim’s Island

Photobucket

Another good family movie is Nim’s Island. It is about the story of Nim and her father, a research scientist, who lives in a remote island. Nim is a nature lover and enjoys reading the tales of an adventurer named Alex Rover. Its author is Alexandra Rover, an agoraphobic who hasn’t left her apartment in a very long time. When Nim’s father gets lost in the sea, Nim sought out the help of Alexandra Rover and this is where their adventure began.

Since it is a family movie, the movie is a bit predictable. There are also plot elements which go nowhere like the huge talk about Nim’s mother in the beginning of the movie. Nevertheless, it still is great as it has the prefect recipe of comedy, suspense, drama and even a touch of romance. The scenery is lovely and the special effects are spectacular. With a big name cast like Jodie Foster and Gerard Butler, good acting is expected from this movie. Child actress Abigail Breslin as Nim also shined in this movie.

Robert Downey Jr’s Comeback as Iron Man

After Superman and Batman, another Marvel Comic Book hero has finally appeared on the big screen and it’s none other than Iron Man!
Photobucket

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is a wealthy weapons dealer who was captured while on a trip to Afghanistan. Forced to assemble a missile by his captors, he instead creates an armored suit to prevent his death because of the shrapnel left in his chest. He soon escaped and thus, the legend of Iron Man begun.

Robert Downey Jr made the right choice to comeback with this movie. He was perfect for the role of Tony Stark as he had the charm, wit and humor to captivate the audience. The supporting cast of Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow also gave a terrific performance.

This film is raking the millions in the box office and I can understand why. It was brilliantly executed and lessons are also learned along the way. So if you want your money’s worth on a quality film, watch Iron Man.

Brian Singer to Direct New Superman Movie

40.jpg

According to Variety, director Bryan Singer says he will definitely be back to direct another Superman movie. Singer and Warner Brothers will be working on the sequel to Superman Returns, which is untitled at the moment and aimed for a mid to late 2009 release. During an interview at the San Diego Comic Convention, he was positive that Warner Brothers would ask him to directa nother Superman film, but there was nothing final yet. Now it’s definitely a done deal. Legendary Pictures will be co-financing the movie project.

There’s no other news on the cast or what the story line will be about, although Brandon Routh will definitely be playing Superman again. It is said that the budget for the sequel will be less than superman Return, but of course that doesn’t mean it will be any less entertaining.

Spiderwick Chronicles

42.jpg

Following popular hits like the Harry Potter series, Narnia and even Lord of the Rings, that started out as best selling series of books, comes another fantasy movie titled “The Spiderwick Chronicle”. This movie, while attuned towards children, is not exclusive to children but to adults as well who love adventure and still has that inner kid in them.

The story revolves around the Grace family, with Jared, his twin bother Simon, his sister Mallory and their mother. The family leave New York and go on to live in an old house owned by their great, great uncle Arthur Spiderwick. The moment the family moves to the Spiderwick estate, strange things start to happen. People began to disappear and lots of accidents happen one after the other!

What happens? Watch out for it!

The Grand

nullThis is a terrific cast ensemble that can garner a lot of laughs in this improvisational comedy. It tells the story of a certain group of eccentric players that will compete in a multimillion-dollar poker match.

There are a high percentage of funny scenes, and the enjoyment of the characters is infectious. There are some gags that may have gone too long, but most of the film is paced crisply with consistent uproars. The main character is “One Eyed” Jack Faro (played by Woody Harrelson) who has various addictions and who lost the casino that his grandfather left him. To gain it back, he has to enter a poker competition to win $10 million.

The Forbidden Kingdom

chan_li.jpg

For the first time in kung fu movie history, Jet Li and Jackie Chan face off each other, pitting strikes against the other. The movie is upcoming as this review is being written but I have the feeling that the movie is going to receive a good audience response. Main synopsis is more or less a twist of the Chinese tale, the Monkey King. In this movie, the Monkey King is imprisoned by a villain and an American is sent back in time while shopping for kung fu DVDs in a rundown Chinatown pawnshop. In his quest, the American is joined by a wise kung fu master, the role played by Jet Li, and a band of misfit warriors, their leader being the role played by Jackie Chan. The catch is that only the true precepts of the kung fu can the American succeed and find a way to go back home.
